The story of Mamertino has millennial roots. To understand its story at best we have to go back to 89 B.C. when the mercenaries “Mamertini” sailed to and conquered Messina. After the conquest, these people settled in the territory and implanted the grape that at the time was knowned as “Nocera”, leaving us an invaluable heritage. Messina was then conquered by the Roman Empire, and during the capitol’s regimen, Nocera was considered as 1 of the top 5 wines in the whole empire.
There are proven sources (De Bello Gallico) that narrate how Julius Cesar has celebrated his third consulate with the “Mamertinum”, our Mamertino. Another sources narrate how this wine was frequently shipped from Patti to Costantinopoli.
In 2004 the DOP Mamertino was instituted, giving an official status to this millennial wine, and today we take care to maintain the essence of the wine that Cesar loved to drink with “Sicè” and “Cvrpanè”.
